    In the recent paper by Hoyle et al. (2017), it was suggested that diurnal changes in Actin production were responsible for wounds occurring at night taking longer to close than wounds that occur in the day. The authors supported this conclusion with a 118 patient dataset from the international Burn injury database. While results from the in-vitro scratch assay and mouse models suggest a circadian rhythm in actin production, they take no account of the multivariate nature of wound healing outside of the laboratory and in the clinic or community. Burn wound healing is a multi-modal process with many confounding factors. Time of injury, time until first aid is administered, the time taken until advanced care is given including, if necessary surgical closure, the injuring agent, depth of burn co-morbidities and active management all will affect wound healing.

    Our own data suggests that there is no difference. Using the Cox proportional hazard method to assess our own data, from 1999 to the present time. We analysed over 5000 Adult records with complete data. The median healing time for wound closure was identical at 12 days post-injury. There was no significant difference in time from injury to referral and assessment. The ratio of injuries occurring during the night (20:00 to 08:00) compared to daytime was 1:4.
