ONLINE COVER On the Origin of Hairy Cell. A peek into the illuminated ruins of the city of Petra, Jordan, reminds us that enigmas spill their secrets slowly. The ruins were discovered more than 200 years ago. Yet, present-day digs continue to reveal new clues about the city's origin and inhabitants. In this week's issue, cancer "archaeologists" Chung et al. unearth an unexpected origin for hairy cell leukemia—a B-cell malignancy first described in the 1920's—by pinpointing the BRAF mutation in self-renewing hematopoietic stem cells (see accompanying Focus by Dick).
