ONLINE COVER Monitoring Motor Fluctuations. This illustration shows a smartwatch capturing fluctuations of resting tremor and dyskinesia while worn by a patient with Parkinson's disease. Powers et al. developed a remote monitoring system that used inertial sensor data from wrist-worn smartwatches to detect changes in motor function in response to treatments and sub-clinical side effects of medications in individuals with Parkinson's disease. The smartwatch-based measurements matched clinicians' evaluations of tremor severity and dyskinesia presence. These results demonstrate the utility of remote monitoring for improving patient-clinician communication, informing about patient adherence to treatment, and identifying potential opportunities for medication titration.
