ONLINE COVER The Virtues of Venom. This image shows a deathstalker scorpion poised to strike. In this issue, two independent research groups investigated therapeutics based on scorpion venom-derived peptides. Cook Sangar et al. identified a peptide that accumulates in cartilage and showed that a systemically delivered steroid-toxin peptide conjugate alleviated joint inflammation in a rat model of rheumatoid arthritis. Wang et al. used chlorotoxin peptide as a chimeric antigen receptor to direct engineered T cells to bind to glioblastoma, showing tumor regression and improved survival in mouse models. Both papers demonstrate how venom-derived peptides can be wielded against disease. [CREDIT: PROTASOV AN/SHUTTERSTOCK]
