ONLINE COVER Dismantling Tumors, Brick by Brick. In this image, the brown bricks depict a B cell tumor, resting on a base of green bricks representing the bone marrow microenvironment (stroma). The purple brick symbolizes PKC-β, a protein produced by the stroma that helps support the tumor cells and promotes their survival. Park et al. examined the tumorigenic role of PKC-β and demonstrated that PKC-β inhibitors, illustrated by the hand removing the purple brick, improved the cytotoxicity of chemotherapies in multiple leukemia models in vitro and in mice.
