ONLINE COVER InSSssspired Design. This image shows a patch with microneedles (pink), developed to transmit medicinal liquids such as vaccines through the skin. Bae et al. designed flexible patches housing microneedles with multiple grooves, mimicking the fangs of rear-fanged snakes. When patches were applied to the skin of mice and guinea pigs, the microneedles delivered liquid solutions via capillary action within 15 s. Inactivated influenza virus administered bythe microneedle patch produced similar protection against lethal viral challenge as intramuscular vaccination in mice. With further testing, using a larger variety of drug formulations and animal models, this platform technology could be useful for rapid transdermal liquid drug delivery.
