ONLINE COVER Mitochondria in the Spotlight. Within a mitochondrion (pictured), the electron transport chain produces energy for a cell. Perry et al. developed an imaging system using resonance Raman spectroscopy to quantify the mitochondrial redox state in real-time. By shining a laser on the heart surface, the authors could detect and quantify changes in mitochondrial redox state during restricted oxygen delivery and predict imminent cardiac arrest in rats.
