ONLINE COVER The Human Kidney. Our personal waste treatment plant filters arterial blood (red), removing urea and restoring electrolyte balance, returning the cleansed blood to the venous system (blue). Kidney fibrosis, or scarring, accompanies many chronic diseases, ultimately resulting in kidney failure. Chau et al. have identified a microRNA, miR-21, that coordinates fibrosis and so represents a promising target for drugs to inhibit this destructive process. [CREDIT: C.
