ONLINE COVER Making Muscles Stronger. Fluorescent image of a tibialis anterior muscle (pink) from a dystrophic SCID/mdx mouse injected with mesoangioblast stem cells (green) engineered to express the human dystrophin gene. Mesoangioblasts derived from the blood vessels of mdx mice (a model of human Duchenne muscular dystrophy) were genetically corrected using a human artificial chromosome containing the entire human dystrophin locus and tagged with an enhanced green fluorescent protein reporter gene (Tedesco et al.). The corrected mesoangioblasts, when injected into SCID/mdx recipient mice, engrafted in dystrophic muscles and contributed to the formation of new myofibers.
