ONLINE COVER The Power of One. Shown are structures of the three different variants (top) of factor H binding protein (fHBP), a powerful antigen of the bacterial pathogen meningococcus B. Using a structure-based vaccine design approach, Scarselli et al. engineered amino acids from variant 2 (green) and variant 3 (gold) of fHBP onto the surface of the variant 1 protein (blue) to produce a chimeric antigen containing epitopes from all three variants. A vaccine prepared using this chimeric immunogen protected mice against all strains of meningococcus B. This vaccine may be useful for preventing infection with meningococcus B, a major cause of meningitis and sepsis. [CREDIT: R. RAPPUOLI]
